Workplace safety statistics reveal that approximately 1.5 million workplace attacks are reported annually, with many more incidents going unreported. This alarming number highlights how violence prevention training is crucial in safeguarding employees and potentially saving lives.

More than checking off your compliance needs, California workplace violence training can help guarantee that your teams gain confidence in handling possible threats, helping create a more proactive and open culture of safety.

What is California workplace violence training?

Based on SB 533 and the Labor Code section 6401.9, California employers are required to create a workplace prevention plan and train employees on workplace violence. This training is designed to help employers and employees recognize, prevent, and respond to potential incidents of violence at work.

Most California employees are required to undergo training. But there are a few exceptions listed in the labor code such as employees working remotely in a location of their choice and law enforcement agencies.

What are the requirements for SB 553 training in California?

The state regulations require employers to meet the following criteria:

  • Training content should be easy to understand and tailored to fit the workers' education, skills, and language.
  • An initial training is required, with annual refreshers after.
  • Training should familiarize workers with the workplace violence prevention plan.
  • It’s required to cover how workers can report workplace violence incidents without fear of retaliation. Workers should also understand the specific risks of their roles and what preventive measures are in place to keep them safe.
  • Training should allow workers to ask questions and engage with people knowledgeable about the prevention plan.
  • As new hazards are discovered, additional training should be given to keep everyone in the loop and safe.

Keep teams safe with California workplace violence training

Your team’s safety should always be a top priority. As teams learn to de-escalate situations, respond effectively, and reduce the risk of harm, they protect themselves, the customers, and the organization.
